This wikiHow teaches you how to scan a document into your computer, smartphone, or tablet. In order to do this on a computer, you must have a scanner (or a printer with a built-in scanner) connected to your computer. You can use the built-in Notes app on an iPhone to scan documents, while Android users can use Google Drive's scan feature.

    Place a document face-down in your scanner. You'll also want to make sure that your scanner is on and connected to your computer before proceeding.

    Open Start . Click the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

    Type fax and scan into Start. Doing so will search for the Windows Fax and Scan app.

    Click Windows Fax and Scan . It's at the top of the Start window.

    Click New Scan . This option is in the upper-left side of the Fax and Scan window. A new window will open.

    Make sure that your scanner is correct. If you don't see your scanner's name at the top of the window or the wrong scanner is listed, click Change... in the upper-right side of the window and then select your scanner's name.

    Select a type of document. Click the "Profile" drop-down box, then select the type of document (e.g., Photo) in the drop-down box.

    Decide on your document's color. Click the "Color format" drop-down box, then select either Color or Black and White. Your scanner may also have different options for colors here.

    Select a file type. Click the "File type" drop-down box, then click the file type (e.g., PDF or JPG) that you want to use to store the scanned document on your computer.

    • When scanning anything other than a photo, it's best to select PDF.

    Change any other options on the page. Depending on your scanner, you may have other options (e.g., "Resolution") that you can modify prior to scanning your document.

    Click Preview . It's at the bottom of the window. This will bring up a preliminary scan to show you what your scanned document will look like.

    • If your document appears crooked, uneven, or chopped-off, you can readjust the document in your scanner and then click Preview again to see if your adjustment fixed the problem.

    Click Scan . It's at the bottom of the window. Your document will begin scanning into your computer using your selected options and format.

    Find your scanned document. To do so:

    • Open Start
    • Open File Explorer
    • Click Documents on the left side of the window.
    • Double-click the Scanned Documents folder.

    Select a storage location. Click the "Save To" drop-down box, then click a folder in which you want to save your scanned document (e.g., Desktop).

    Change other options on the page. Depending on the type of file that you're scanning, you may want to change the "Resolution" value or the "Orientation" value here.

    Click Scan . It's in the bottom-right corner of the window. Your document will begin scanning into your computer. When it finishes, you'll be able to find it in your selected save location.

    Open Notes. Tap the Notes app icon.

    • If Notes opens to a note, first tap < Notes in the top-left corner of the screen.
    • If Notes opens to the "Folders" page, tap a storage location before continuing.

    Tap . This plus-shaped icon is at the bottom of the screen. A pop-up menu will appear.

    Tap Scan Documents . It's at the top of the pop-up menu.

    Point your phone's camera at a document. You'll want to make sure that all of the document is on-screen.

    • The better-centered the document is on-screen, the cleaner the scan will be.

    Tap the "Capture" button. This white circle is at the bottom of the screen. Doing so will scan your document.

    Tap Keep Scan . It's in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

    • You can also tap and drag any one of the spheres in the corners of the scan to enlarge or shrink the area of the scan that is saved.
    • If you want to try to scan the document again, tap Retake in the bottom-left corner of the screen instead.

    Tap Save . This option is in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

    Tap . It's in the top-right corner of the screen.

    Scroll right and tap Create PDF . Make sure that you scroll from right to left over the bottom row of options, not the top.

    Tap Done . It's in the top-left corner of the screen.

    Save your scanned document. Tap Save File To... when prompted, then do the following:

    • Tap iCloud Drive or another cloud storage option.
    • Tap Add in the top-right corner of the screen.

    Open Google Drive. Tap the Google Drive app icon, which resembles a blue, green, and yellow triangle.

    Select a folder. Tap a folder in which you would like to save your scan.

    Tap . It's in the bottom-right corner of the screen. A pop-up menu will appear.

    Tap Scan . This camera-shaped icon is in the pop-up menu. Your phone's (or tablet's) camera will open.

    Point your phone's camera at a document. The document should be centered in the middle of the screen.

    • Make sure that your document is flat and completely on-screen before proceeding.

    Tap the "Capture" button. It's a blue-and-white circle at the bottom of the screen. This will scan your document.

    Tap . This is in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Doing so saves your scan.

    • You can also crop your scan by tapping and dragging any of the spheres located around the edge of the scan.
    • For more options (e.g., color), tap ⋮ in the top-right corner of the screen.
    • To add more pages to the PDF, tap + and then scan another item.

    Save your scanned document onto your phone. Tap ⋮ in the bottom-right corner of the scanned document's thumbnail, then tap Download in the resulting pop-up menu.
